Historical Impact and Contact

The establishment of a European settlement at Somerset, near the tip of Cape York, in 1863 had a significant impact on the Torres Strait Islander peoples. This contact brought about changes to their traditional way of life, including the introduction of new diseases and displacement from their lands.

Despite these challenges, the Torres Strait Islander peoples have maintained their cultural identity and continue to play an active role in Australian society.
